Dear Friends,
Margie* was nine-years-old when she started attending Family Service of El Paso.
Her father was an alcoholic sentenced to prison, and her mother divorced him. Her
mother started rebuilding her life and became engaged. Right before the wedding day,
Margie made an outcry, and it was discovered that the fiancé had been sexually
abusing her for a long time. The mother confronted her fiancé, and he confessed.
Then he killed himself. Margie had to deal with the sexual abuse issues and the
horrors of having a loved one commit suicide.
This is not a Lifetime Movie of the Week or an Oprah episode. It is a case typical of
those that the staff of Family Service of El Paso is challenged with daily. Today
Margie is gaining control over her anger and playing it out in a therapeutic way such
as in skits during her play therapy sessions. Fortunately for Margie and her family,
the doors of Family Service of El Paso were open and ready to provide “strength to
families under stress.”
This story does not end here though. Due to governmental cuts, Family Service of El
Paso faces a reduction in state funding for counseling services to abused children and
victims of domestic violence. What this translates to is that approximately 900
fellow El Pasoans’ lives will be affected by this reduction as they will not be in
receipt of counseling services. The ripple effect may even affect the life of someone
you know.
Family Service of El Paso is a private non-profit social service agency founded in
1893. The Agency has been committed to serving the community for over a century by
providing services to a low-income population who would otherwise be left to cope
alone with issues like the ones Margie faced.
Funding for services provided is limited and does not cover the full extent of our
expenses. That’s why I’m asking you to help Family Service of El Paso today with a
tax-deductible gift. I know that if you could help just one child like Margie, you
would.
You and I agree that families are the backbone of our society and that successful
families build a healthy and strong community.
Will you join me in making sure that no family is turned away for lack of funds?
Margie and families like hers should be able to count on us for help.
Richard Salcido
Executive Director
P.S. Your support for Family Service of El Paso will make a big difference here in
the El Paso county. Eighty-nine cents of every dollar you give will directly benefit
the families who need a helping hand.
* We would like to express our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to Margie (not her real name) and her family for
allowing us to share her story with you.
